City Hall

“The [S]tage is set,” and city hall is Stage 1.

Here is Part 1 of a 3.5-part series documenting a Black Lives Matter protest in Orlando, Florida. Protesters rallied in the courtyard outside city hall in Downtown Orlando to embrace the words of several orators and to chant vociferously at police officers and the figurative home of the government.

Police Department

The people took their social grievances, cries for justice and demands for existential recognition to the doorstep of their primary target.

Part 2 of this series shows protesters loosening their anger. While it remained peaceful, the fervent hostility was apparent.

Lake Eola

Momentum lasted — no, it was just picking up. This movement doesn’t seem like it’ll fade any time soon.

I’d left Stage 2 thinking those were the last protesters I’d see for the day — Part 3 shows why I was wrong. Just outside my apartment building amassed hundreds of protesters, blocking traffic that was drowned out by the endless sounding of every car’s horn. They weren’t signals of anger, though; rather, it was their way of participating, too.

In Transit

Protesters paraded through the streets, as police officers blocked off roads for 2,000-plus people to express their frustration, release their anger and, hopefully, open a dialogue — of sorts.

Walking from city hall to the police department took around 30 minutes and spanned about 1.2 miles one way. In the [literal] heat of it all, I didn’t recognize the distance I “endured” during Part 3.5. The experience of the day captivated me fully.
